THE SUN Date: 98-08-03 02:08:08 EDT Kent, Charolette King suggested I write to you about a radio program I heard in the late 1970's. At 6:45 a.m. on my drive time to work there was a program on daily called "Bible in the News" run by the Southwest Radio Church out of Oklahoma. I am not an avid Christian radio listener but this particular program always had interesting commentary and thought provoking guests. One day the host, a Rev. Webber, had a group of scientists, I believe astrophysicists, discussing the then current state of our sun. The scientists stated that our sun was rapidly consuming its hydrogren and when most of the hydrogren was depleted it would most likely go nova. Some of the signs they talked about (as well as I can remember) were increasing flares, ejection of the sun's mass(CME's?), increasing heat output, and great magnetic disturbances. They said when the hydrogren was consumed our sun would become a helium star for a very short time (seems like they said less than a year or two) and without the balance of hydrogren and helium, the sun would collapse in on itself, then blow out into a nova. From what I understand, CME's began to be recorded in the early 1990's and the heat output of our star has been steadily increasing. I still can't believe that with June being the hottest month ever recorded on earth, that no one is looking at the obvious source, the sun. Suddenly cosmic rays have been detected from our sun. Well I believe this is something new for our star as cosmic rays are normally generated by helium under intense pressure and heat. Anyway Kent that is about the extent of what I remember of that particular program. It is obvious that something is seriously wrong with our sun and with NASA having "lost" contact with SOHO and other sattelites, we are being kept in the dark. If that program was correct, we probably don't have long to wait for the nova experience. I really enjoy Orbit and check it every day. You are providing a great service to us who are concerned about what in the heck is going on. Keep up the good work. Name withheld
