Since the other GRB you refer to was in a distant galaxy, it produced a weaker signal on the detectors but was intrinsicly more powerful in terms of the energy it put out since it was so much further away. This recent one originated in our Galaxy. I investigated this on the internet and find interestingly, that the massive star that was the source of this gamma ray outburst lies in the direction of the Galactic center, 10° of angle away, but twice as far away in distance (behind the GC). The importance of this one is that it is the first large GRB (gamma ray burst) to be detected occurring in our own Galaxy. A core explosion would be much larger and more prolonged.  I wonder if there was a connection to the Dec. 26th Tsunami. It occurred at: 00:58:53 (UTC) = Coordinated Universal Time (7:58:53 AM = local time at epicenter) while the GRB occurred 20 hours and 30 minutes later on December 27 at 21:30:26 UT. The timing seems very close. My theory predicts that a gravity wave disturbance may precede large core outbursts.

...expanding shock fronts produce superluminal gravity waves. Podkletnov as demonstrated this in his gravity repulsion beam experiment where he has clocked speeds in excess of 67 c. Tesla also claimed to have produced superluminal pulses with his monopolar shock wave emissions. Cosmic ray outbursts producing gamma ray bursts would similarly have produced a superluminal gravity wave pulse. The gravity wave gradually slows down toward the speed of light as the shock wave spreads out. However, in the mean time it has gotten a head start over the EM (gamma ray) part of the burst. So the claim is not that speculative. It is based on an extrapolation from experimental evidence. Note that it took these gamma ray burst researchers almost two months before they publicized their discovery. I hope they don't wait that long to tell us when the first indications of the  [galactic center] superwave arrives or we will all be in deep trouble...

WEIRD THOUGHT: maybe we got it backwards, maybe the tsunami on earth triggered a powerful thought form and tweaked the galaxy--reminds me of my OBE, it was as though I went through a membrane, stretched it thin and by plowing in got smacked with light--something like that, trouble is at a certain point my analytical self fried--guess I'm a fried egg--Kent
