I find this extremely peculiar, as one would think this rare and potentially spectacular astronomical event would make headline news as did the Levy-Shoemaker encounter with Jupiter.

P.S.
As for Venus ripping itself apart... I don't think so. Take a closer look, it's just the refraction rings surrounding the SOHO occulting disk which is distorting it, exactly in the same manner as it does the surrounding solar flares. I'm sure we'll see it safe and sound in a few days when it emerges from the other side of the sun. In fact, you should see it magically reassemble itself, again courtesy of the refraction rings.

In regards to JPL's Comet Observation Page, Encke is the name of the astronomer who discovered the Encke comet, I believe in the 19th century. Just a coincidence and not to be confused with the Sumerian/Babylonian god Enki.

At first I just thought it was the result of the refraction lines surrounding the occulting disk, but the split starts before Venus reaches them (they circle the disk on the images, close aboard).

This is speculation more than anything, but suppose NASA had the technology in place, (which laughable at this point considering their recent track record), to ensure that 76P/West was dragged into Mars orbit, favorably a low decompositional orbit to minimize surface damage, could they possibly use the captured water and gases from this giant snowball to enhance the atmosphere and water supply on Mars? Of course the planet-wide increase in water and gases would be equivalent to a drop in the bucket, but the measurable results of this experiment would determine if such methods could be used over the long term to terraform Mars into an inhabitable planet. Interestingly, Earth is pelted with thousands of micro-comets everyday, which well may have been responsible for building and replenishing our oceans and atmosphere over the past few billion years. Remember, some of the best solutions mimic mother nature.
Just an intriguing thought.....

Hi Kent, noticed a strange thing looking through today's C3s. The 1218
and 1242 images are clearly identical; the 'streak' at the 10 o'clock position
is a bit obvious. If you look at the 1242, the right hand side has a 'cutaway'
look, in fact, the only perceivable difference I can see between the 2 images
can be seen as a faint 'streak' at about the 4 o'clock position which is
on the 1242 but not the 1218. I know the 2 images were supposedly taken 22
minutes apart and, but for the 'streak', it would not be apparent.
Do you suppose this is just a mistake or are they up to their doctoring tricks again?
