And so the next act begins: the confrontation with Iran, followed by another trumped up terrorist incident here at home (nuclear weapon, dirty bomb, biological weapon - whatever Cheney and his goons pick). This is Rome right before the Germans broke the northern line and the withdrawal from the frontiers of empire began. But the weakening of our empire, while regrettable, is not the main point. The main point is that these manufactured crises provide pretexts for further steps in the centralization of power and the tools of repression in the name of national security and the establishment of the permanent security state. I suppose that we never seriously considered what would happen if truly evil people occupied the White House, the Congress was occupied by craven weasels in business for themselves and the Supreme Court occupied by those who agreed with the "principles" espoused as part of the facade kept up by the White House to deflect criticism, ensure the loyalty of the conservative base, and provide cover for their authoritarian agenda.

This is bad news, to say the least. After all, what exactly has the Revolutionary Guard done to us since our hostages were released from Iran? What is the point of designating them as terrorists now, except for provocation? The Marine Corp general from the 1930's was right: this is nothing but a protection racket run by the rich for which we pay and our military bleeds.
