141P (Machholz 2)) (The Buckshot Comet)
COMET 141P (Machholz 2) is making its first reappearance since its discovery in Colfax, California on August 13, 1994. During this last approach, the comet split into 6 fragments, labeled as A -F. Thus far, Fragment-A (the main nucleus) and Fragment-D are the only Components which have been successfully recovered by observers. It is worth noting that this comets orbit was just ahead of the Earth in 1994, its current orbit trails just behind and South of the Earth, a perilous position given the previous location of its ejecta.

Consequently, since no other fragments have been reacquired, and their exact positions are presently unknown, this comet's close passage raises serious concerns of an unforseen impact event. Please Note: On December 9, 1999 Comet Machholz 2 (Fragment-A) will pass the Sun at a distance of about 0.75 astronomical units - approximately 75.000.000 miles. Telescope and binocular observations at this time will range from 6-7 magnitude. The comet will then complete its perihelion passage on January 15, 1999, passing the Earth at about 0.32 AU, and 2.5 degrees per day.
The entire history of this comets re-aquistion, as well as its delayed ephemeris posting at the IAU, is highly disturbing. Additionally, there have been difficulties by some observers in locating Comet Machholz. Has the ephemeris altered? Please visit the "Comet Observer's Forum" for comfirmation of the preceding statement. It's clear - that something is amiss.
