5/26/99 M-CLASS FLARE  2/27/99 PROTON STORM

5/28/99: Based on observations of yesterday's halo coronal mass ejection, the SEC has issued a magnetic storm watch for tomorrow, May 29th. The watch is for Magnetic-A indices of greater than 20. That level of watch generally would cover a minor magnetic storm, but the SEC's recent track record with magnetic storm forecasts has been very poor. SEE BELOW

THE CME MISSED

5/29/99, SEC: INDICATIONS NOW ARE THAT THE IMPRESSIVE HALO/CORONAL MASS EJECTION OBSERVED ON THE 27TH LIKELY ORIGINATED FROM BEHIND THE LIMB - NO GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED FROM THIS EVENT.

ANOTHER CME THAT MISSED

6/3/99 SOHO C2 CME

A large halo CME has been observed from the sun, however, it has not been possible to determine from current data whether the ejected material is travelling towards the Earth or away from the Earth. Increased geomagnetic activity is likely should the ejected material be found to be travelling towards Earth. Futher details will be provided when known.

SOLAR MAGNETIC FIELD STRENGTH: Many models of the solar magnetic field used prior to Ulysses assumed that the solar magnetic field was similar to that of a dipole; field lines near the solar equator were thought to form closed loops whereas field lines from the poles were dragged far into interplanetary space by the solar wind. For a dipole, the field strength over the poles is twice that at the equator. Ulysses found that the amount of outward magnetic flux in the solar wind did not vary greatly with latitude, indicating the importance of pressure forces near the sun for evenly distributing magnetic flux. (MAG experiment, A. Balogh, Imperial College; E. Smith, Jet Propulsion Laboratory).
