Pro-cloning group claims to have
embryos
http://www.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/11/27/clonaid.clone/index.html
(CNN) Clonaid, unlike Advanced Cell Technology, wants to use
its embryos to impregnate a woman and produce a clone...
Clonaid is an offshoot of the Raelians, a group that calls itself
a religion and believes extraterrestrial beings created life on
Earth. Some outside the group have questioned whether its
scientists have the know-how to create a clone..."I will not
tell you whether there has been any implantation or if there's
any
pregnancy."

Vatican Condemns Cloning of
Embryo
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17787-2001Nov26.html
(Washington Post) The Vatican condemned the first reported
cloning of a human embryo, saying Monday that promises of
"sensational" cures from diseases can't justify the step by
scientists in the United States...The Vatican statement said
that the human embryo cloning made ever more urgent the
bioethical question of just when human life begins...The Vatican
said that life formed in this "inhuman" way nonetheless has "its
dignity like that of every human life which is given
existence."

(Boston Globe) Some ethicists and policy-makers expressed
outrage yesterday that the private-sector scientists have
pressed ahead before the public debate on the ethics of cloning
is concluded..."Blowing ahead like this makes it more likely that
similar research will be banned. This is irresponsible. I'm not sure
it should be outlawed, but there should be well-thought-out
ethical guidelines and strong oversight. It's not good enough
for
researchers to promise they won't clone a human
baby."

Experts Rip Cloning
'Story'
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,48629,00.html
(Wired News) Scientists say they've cloned the first human
embryo, but critics are calling the announcement a shameless
cry for funding..."I think they're mainly trying to bring attention
to the company and break down certain barriers so (embryonic
cloning) can occur in the future with less public attention
and
outrage."

Two breakthrough technologies bring human cloning one step
closer to reality. The editor-in-chief of Scientific American
stopped short of describing the process as a virgin conception,
but said it was in the same
vein.
