Hi,
Some people posted to the sci.astro news group right after
a possible meteorite created a sky show in the middle of the
day.

Here is the story from CNN:

Wife and I (and neighbors) in northcentral PA were startled, at about
6:22 edst  by what sounded like something hitting our house and making
a boom noise (sonic boom??).
Anyone else hear this??

We just got a phone call that a plane crashed near Stony Fork, PA
(near Wellsboro)- about 15 miles from us.  Also reports that sirens
are going off.  Pray to God this is not true.

Fortunately, the reports now say that the boom WAS caused by a meteor
that showered a 4 county area with debris.  This was heard on a
scanner.  Guess I better go out and check out the lawn!!

Greetings neighbor!

I work at the ABC affiliate in Elmira (NY), and we have received dozens of
calls. The sonic boom was widely heard across Chemung and Steuben counties of
New York, and Bradford and Tioga counties of Pennsylvania - several reports of

broken windows...

We also heard about a possible debris fall near Wellsboro, and have a news
crew heading down that way to check it out.

We've heard reports from other affiliate stations that the fireball was seen
as far south as Maryland.

Thanks for the reply.  We're in Mansfield.  Unfortunately, we were
inside when it happened.  The neighbors say that a radio station in
Wellsboro has had rather extensive coverage of reports.
Hope you find something, but don't bet on it!
Most meteorites that are found are metallic (iron-nickel), but most
that fall are stony.  They just blend in better with native rock.  But
they should be scorched and pitted from the heat.

I just recieved a report (6:19 PM) from a friend who saw a daytime
fireball over Western New York (Amherst), heading toward the Southwest. It
was about 8 degrees above the horizon with a slope of 10 degrees from the
horizontal. No sonic boom was reported.  Bright orange in color and about 5x
brighter than the full moon.

Tristan DiLapo
