Enormous Irish Temple Discovered Underground Nov. 21 An enormous temple that was once surrounded by 300 towering oak posts lies directly underneath the Hill of Tara in County Meath, Irish archaeologists recently announced...In addition to the temple and the Stone of Destiny, the Hill of Tara houses the remains of a number of large ring forts and tombs. Several other standing stones are at the site as well. Legend has it that would-be kings had to race their chariots towards two such stones. |

THE MARSH LAKE

Kent, I found the little lake in question, as I suspected it is small, the actual water (in summer) is only about 50 or 60 yards wide, although there is about 5 or 6 acres of a reed bed, so presumable in winter the lake is much bigger. It is about 1 mile to the mound at Dowth, but I couldn't see the mound, only the trees near the mound, maybe the trees are blocking the view of the mound. It is a delightful place with swans, ducks and water hens, I also say a sparrow hawk passing the prey in it's beak, looked like a mouse.
So far I don't have a name for the lake, I will follow up.

From my reckoning of geometry in the Boyne valley that pond lies in a key place. Any accesable maps anywhere that show the pond?
Does the pond have a name?

Thinking here....
This being a marsh lake and if it is prehistoric, it was probably a significant place for the ancients, reeds, herbs and...leeches.
Certain leeches were used in healing wounds, keep them from infecting, reduce pain, etc. The saliva of leeches contains analgesic and anaesthetic compounds, as well as hirudin, an anti-blood clotting agent.
With both Dowth and the Hill of Slane nearby [I think] could we be seeing the actual Well of Slane? DeDanaan or earlier--Firbolg-lore....
"Airmed, her brother and father sang spells over the well of Slane in Ireland. "Now their mortally wounded men were cast into it as soon as they were slain. They were alive when they came out." Their mortally wounded became whole through the incantation of the four leeches that were about the well. This gives wells their rebirth and healing aspects known even today. Welsh mythology also has similar stories of wells that heal or give knowledge."
The ancients apparently also tossed things in these lakes--Excalibur-lore, etc.
Might be useful to look towards the lake from Dowth.

Hello Kent,
The lake is I think at O 743 013 (OS map). Correct? Its name is Ballyboy Lake (see page 234 (and other pages, like 63 with a picture and 127) in "Newgrange and the bent of the Boyne", Geraldine Stout, ISBN 1 85918 341 7). I could not find a link to myths, but perhaps I overlooked it.

Kent, It could be Bal from Balor, an ancient sun deity. Balor was a giant with a huge malignant eye which could burn people and things. Very nasty!
Myself and Richard Moore have speculated that the name Baltray (at the mouth of the Boyne where there are two standing stones) does not mean Baile Trá, the Town of the Strand, as has been commonly held, but rather Baile as a corruption of Balor, for Balor's Strand. There is a myth which connects the area with the Rockabill Islands, which is where the sun rises on Winter Solstice as viewed from Baltray.

Thanks for your input. I immediately wondered if Bal was a connection to Sumer-Babylonia-Iraq.

Kent, In all probability, the Balor of Ireland is connected with the Baal of Babylonia.
Just a note about the swan. If you are doing an investigation, you really should check out the Cygnus Enigma:

Interesting! Don't know if this material is all intact, but in 98 I did an investigation concerning a Seti-like signal from Cygnus:

Now there is little wild land left at all, and even that is shrinking at an unprecedented rate. There is simply not enough space for all the gnomes and elves, fauns and faeries, goblins, ogres, trolls and bogies, nymphs, sprites, and dryads. So where are they? Are they dead? No. So where did they go? The answer is a bit surprising. They didn't go anywhere. We did. |
Reed (Ngetal) 28 October24 November * Reed, although not a tree but a grass-like plant, is usually associated with Samhain, the Celtic New Year. * The Reed Moon means winter is approaching. It is a month of turning our energies toward hearth and home. The tree symbolises family, fidelity and trust. * Reeds are burned to honour household spirits and a familys patron deity; and in ancient Scotland, a broken reed was an omen of familial betrayal. * Reeds may be placed through your home, especially the kitchen area, to bring the blessing of unity to your family. * Reed represents the turning within that we must undergo to nurture our souls hunger for spirituality. * The reed's qualities include protection, spiritual progress and hunger for truth. |
